Army Of Monsters is two guys playing just bass and bass and drums and drums. Or at least that’s how it started in an abandoned mansion in Iowa. Now AOFM is a living force of four, at times five, young Chicagoans just now lighting the fuse of fame with music that scorches the musical battleground between Nine Inch Nails and Muse and Paramore. The core battery is the drums Dan Hill and the multi-basses of Ryan Loftsgaarden on record with Dorian Duffy (Badfish, ex-Company Of Thieves) holding down the traditional role when AOFM is conquering the clubs of the Midwest. Loftsgaarden’s bass is armed with so much electronic firepower that no guitarist, or battalion of guitarists, are necessary to re-create the both grandiose and grungy room of sound that AOFM rules. Keyboardist Nick Pampanella adds deep grooves supplementing the battling basses. And belying the Monsters moniker is Bianca Minniti at the center of this maelstrom with soaring clear vocals and beauty that provides a visual focus amidst the animated activity of the rest of the troops. The debut album is titled “Stadium Of Stars,” recorded in both the Hawkeye State and the Land Of Lincoln, with plans for an initial release just prior to SXSW. Los Angeles-based production team Audiojack added dramatic sampling to the already dynamic music plus New York’s hip-hop trendsetter Erik Arc Elliot rhymed in. The mixing challenge was ably met by Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Hawthorne Heights). Their oh-so-recent live debut at Chicago’s Angels And Kings showed a band that owned the stage and rocked the capacity crowd demonstrating that their forthcoming support role for My Dear Disco is just the start of a band that will create both head-shaking for those seeking to classify them musically and body-shaking for the rest of us.
